2 Jun Avebury v AVCC

This last Sunday we entered June to typical British weather….cold winds, driving rain, grey skies…..

We rocked up to Avebury sadly depleted with a team of 9 due to injuries, old age (sciatica), weddings and a range of other excuses. However, we were in good spirits and undaunted. Graham won the toss and decided to bat on the basis (a) we needed the practise (b) get the best of the conditions (c) to hack their captain off and (d) under the expectation that the game would not finish. We were on and off the pitch several times according to the severity of the rain. Conditions were atrocious and the pantomime was brightened up by their skip, Dominic Fry, instructing his bowlers and batsman not to tear up the waterlogged strips either side. Much dancing and strange movements observed. Gave me quite a giggle. Not much to comment on our performance; 61-8 when we decided we should have tea. Our 9 men had been added to by Dudley Perrin looking dapper in shorts and a pink shirt who kindly made sure we remained unbeaten by tea. The highlights…our new player, David Battinson got a calm 26 as opener with 4 nice 4’s scored from lovely off-drives; Shane Williams - another new boy scored 11. Extras scored 14. The tea was magnificent and worthy of much praise. After tea, we shook hands and went to drink at their Club House. A meritorious draw. All happy. Actually a nice day and it was good to have relaxation, banter and good relations with the Avebury team. Nice chaps. Well done to David Battinson, Peter Williams, Shane Williams, Bruce Carter, Stephen Fowler, Matt Dancey, Julian Lishman, Ollie Lishman, Dudley Perrin and Graham Newland for turning up and enjoying the rain. For those who like to keep an eye on our youth development, Collingbourne and Avon Valley U-11s beat Avebury by a 100 runs in the morning, with Mattie and Skye Newland taking wickets and scoring a number of boundaries. Ones to watch for the future
