Farley vs AVCC
Not one of our better days....the sort of day when one talks about "taking the positives" out of the match and and "learning from the game" .
Things didn't start well. We took the field with just 8 players after the home skipper won the toss and decided gleefully to bat against our depleted numbers. Tim Gent did not arrive at all, and Ben & Matt arrived 20 minutes late. At least Farley leant us a couple of players for that time. Much needed, as the ground had the shortest boundaries I have ever seen on either side of the wicket so that anything firmly hit either side of the wicket was likely to turn into a boundary. We spent a lot of time getting to know the hedges around the ground intimately.
Farley batted well, and put away every loose ball with aplomb. Their captain and opener (Glanville) kindly retired on 101 not out, as part of a gigantic total of 245-6. We helped them immensely with 8 dropped catches, but our bowling was picked apart - Ieuan Pearn (0-47), Dan Thorburn (1-42), Matt White (1-58) and Ben Jones (0-43). The best stats went to a last minute substitute who we called up when desparate....teenager Jack Glibbery who took 4-36. Answering our distress call he turned up over an hour after the start and we could have done with his wickets sooner as our flurry of bowled outs occurred at the end after they had passed 200.
In contrast our batting didn't start well. It might have been the delicious cake they served for tea. Chasing 7 an over, we were quickly 9-4 off the first 5 overs. Matt White then made a sparkling 50 comprising 11 4's, and Dudley stayed with him for some time adding 12 as part of a 63 runs partnership. Unfortunately, no one else got to double figures and we were all out for just 94. It didn't help that young Glibbery's dad gave our captain out with an appalling lbw decision when he looked set. Matt's 50 was a positive, Angus looked in good form until he tried to take the fight to their bowlers, Bruce outperformed his average, and overall we scored more today against Farley than in the same fixture last season. Morale was a bit down as we left this evening, and we must look forward to the next game.
Ho hum....
