Burbage vs AVCC
On a wonderfully hot summers day we took on the mighty Burbage. I'm told they have a professional Kiwi who's played Test cricket, fortunately he wasn't selected. Their average age was still around half ours so we started the game with some trepidation. Despite the gap in relative fitness levels (and waist lines) we put up a good fight but, alas, came up short.
We won the toss and decided to bat first for a change. Alex H (11) and myself (14) began confidently, helped by some lusty blows by young Alex. Rob Hedderwick (16) was just starting to take their spinners apart when he got a ball that bounced, or rather didn't, less than 6 inches off the pitch and had him plum lbw, unfair. Graham Newland (27) anchored the middle of the innings with Ieuan Pearn (12) and Peter Williams (20) providing some late fireworks. A total of 127 was always likely to be too light but gave us something to bowl at.
Tim Law toiled manfully (7-23-0) without due reward. Ieuan Pearn (4-13-2) had the longest run up and grabbed a couple of key wickets. Ben Eveling, Graham Newland, Peter Williams and myself tried to trip them up with a variety of mystery slow bowling (Moeen Ali might be the first person to bowl a Doosra for England but Ben's been doing it in Wiltshire all year). The pick of the bowling was Ben Jones (5-25-4) picking up his first wickets for AVCC, well done Ben. Burbage added a bit of fun by getting their batsmen to play a shot they've never tried before to the first ball they each faced. We saw two reverse sweeps, a couple of switch hits and even a "ramp" shot.
I see we have a return match in August, let's hope they don't bring the Kiwi.
